How much does a trip to Japan cost?

Daily costs by travel style

Budget travellers using hostels, conbini breakfasts and local trains typically spend around $75 per person per day. Mid-range travellers staying in business hotels and eating out twice a day land closer to $160.

Luxury travel in Japan scales quickly: ryokan stays with kaiseki dinners and private guides move the figure past $400 per person per day.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Since the price increase, the nationwide pass only pays off if you make several long-distance journeys. A Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip is usually cheaper on individual tickets.

Price your actual route on a fare calculator before buying. Regional passes often beat the national one.

Where to save without hurting the trip

Accommodation outside the very centre, lunch sets instead of dinner menus, and free temple grounds instead of paid interiors all reduce cost without reducing the experience.
