Japan rewards planning more than almost any destination. Trains run to the second, cities are dense and walkable, and a two-week trip can comfortably cover Tokyo, Kyoto and one rural detour without ever renting a car.

Why visit

  • One of the world's best public transport networks
  • Exceptional food at every price point
  • Distinct seasons that genuinely change the trip
  • Very safe and easy for first-time solo travellers

How many days

Plan for 10–14 days. Fewer days works if you stay in one region.

Top places

Tokyo
Layered megacity: Shibuya energy, quiet backstreet izakaya.
Kyoto
Temples, machiya townhouses and the country's deepest food culture.
Osaka
Street food capital and the easiest base for day trips.
Hakone
Onsen towns with Mount Fuji views, 90 minutes from Tokyo.

Things to do

Ride the Shinkansen
Tokyo to Kyoto in 2h15 — book reserved seats in advance.
Stay in a ryokan
Tatami rooms, kaiseki dinner and a private or shared onsen.
Early-morning temple walks
Fushimi Inari before 7am is a completely different place.

Where to stay

Tokyo — Shinjuku / Shibuya
Best transport links and nightlife.
Kyoto — Gion / Downtown
Walkable to most temples and restaurants.

Food

Ramen
Regional styles vary enormously — try tonkotsu in Fukuoka, shoyu in Tokyo.
Conbini food
Genuinely good and the backbone of a budget trip.
Kaiseki
Multi-course seasonal dining, usually booked weeks ahead.

Transportation

  • IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) cover metro, buses and convenience stores
  • Japan Rail Pass only pays off with long-distance travel — do the maths
  • Domestic flights beat trains for Hokkaido and Okinawa

Travel requirements

  • Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays — always confirm with your embassy
  • Passport valid for the duration of stay
  • Cash is still useful outside major cities

Entry rules change. Always confirm with the official embassy or consulate before booking.
